This was our first stop at a New York State rest area.  Our experience was pleasant and if all New York rest areas are this dog friendly we will have a good time traveling through New York.

Dogs are not allowed on the grass in the picnic area around the Visitor Center but there are designated dog walks to the east for dogs in passenger cars and to the west for 18-wheel dogs.

The passenger car dog walk area provides a usable green area just shy of an acre.  At about 100 yards long and 125 feet deep, there is plenty area for dogs to take a travel break and sniff around.  The downside is that this area is a low spot.  From the parking area, there is a small embankment near where water drains.  We were visiting after heavy rains and found this area to be very soft.  While the ground was covered in thick grass my paws became very mud covered.

There was no good way for me to inspect the dog walk across the truck parking.  While using the restrooms The Chauffeur got a closer look.  He says the majority of the pet area there appears to be in "a hole" also but there did seem to be a stretch of grass on higher ground.

At both dog walk areas there were dog comfort stations with waste bags provided.

The best part of this stop was the attendant John.  He is very dog friendly.  He came over and gave me some special attention.  He also provided us with travel tips on area parks and maps of the local area.

Passenger Car Dog Walk

Just shy of an acre, traveling dogs can get a good break here.  If visiting after heavy rains this low-lying area will be soft and muddy.

Trucker Dog Walk Area

The dog walk on the west side for 18-wheel dogs was in low-lying area also.
