I-35 Rest Area - Mile Marker 3 (Northbound)

Green Area Availability : Not Scarce / Not Abundant
Green Area Access : Typical Access
Green Area Cleanliness : Typical
Congestion : Effort minimizes contact with others

Despite an initial first wonderful experience with the Oklahoma Welcome Center southbound at I-35 mile marker 225 (which is a Prospect's Pick -- a gold paw on the Journey Guide Map), Oklahoma rest areas have generally been lacking in dog comfort.

Like the southbound Oklahoma I-35 rest area at mile marker 59, the official dog are is in the median between car parking and semi-truck parking.  What looked like a promising area about 20 yards wide and over 100 yards long, this area produced a cocklebur in the dog paw as soon as I stepped into it and within a few feet I had 5 of these nasty thorns in my paw (granted it was cocklebur season in Oklahoma).

The Chauffeur put the back of his hand on the ground and said "OUCH!"  He said the prickly burning feeling didn't leave his hand for about 10 minutes.  A closer inspection revealed that the official dog area was covered almost completely by cocklebur weeds.

We're not giving this dog stop an AVOID  (stop sign on Journey Guide Map) because of the cockleburs but rather because a lot of expense was put forth to place no fewer than 6 "NO PETS ALLOWED" signs along the good grass grass immediately in front of the car parking.

If the State of Oklahoma is going to go to that kind of effort to provide "No Pet Areas" they should at least try to provide an area (ANY SIZE AREA) for dogs that is cocklebur free.

Official Dog Walk

The official dog area is the median between car parking and truck parking.  Dogs will find this area covered in painful cockleburs during the fall (like I did).

NO DOGS ALLOWED

A lot of effort went into placing no less than 6 "No Pets Allowed" signs (all shown on images tab) on the more easily accessible side of the car parking.  Hey Oklahoma, how about giving us dogs just a little bit of this cocklebur-free area so our paws don't hurt visiting you state?
