Shannon Springs Park is so named because of the artesian well that served as a watering hole on the Chisholm Trail during the days of cattle drives north from Texas.

This great city park offers paved walking trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, rock amphitheatre, frisbee golf course, and LOTS of green for dogs to get off the beaten path.  But if you visit during the fall like we did, beware of the cockleburs which we have found to be very common throughout this part of Oklahoma.  Several times one of these thorny things got stuck in my paws.

We will definitely stop by this park whenever in the area.  If you're a traveling dog passing by on I-44, you should plan to take Exit 80, go north to Grand.  Make a left, head west a couple blocks to 9th. Make another left, and go a couple blocks to this great park.

Shannon Springs Park

Trail 1

Show/Hide

Our first time around the lake, someone didn't notice the official trail turned east across a foot bridge, so we made the loop larger by walking along part of the road.

Exercise Trail

Show/Hide

North of the dam, the paved trails loops around the frisbee golf and large open green area.  Along this trail are exercise station stops where your human can do push-ups, sit-ups, etc.

Shorter Loop across Bridge

Show/Hide

The foot bridge across the lake allows for a shorter loop around the lake.

The Spring

It was cool taking a drink from the same spring that real cowboys used to while camping along their cattle drive.

Veterans Memorial

At Shannon Springs Park is the Grady County Veterans Memorial.

Tennis Courts

Off by itself, the green area by the tennis courts offers a dog a chance to get away from normal flow of park traffice.

Southside Green Area

Separated from the picnic area by a small stream and foot bridge, this remote part of the park may be a good dog spot to get away from crowds around the lake.

Amphitheater

The rock walls lining the roads and the rock amphitheate were WPA projects during the Great Depression.  The red rock outdoor stage and benches are neat.

Frisbee Golf & Open Green

North of the lake dam is a large open area with frisbee golf course.

Blue Iron Bridge

The Exercise Trail crosses a nicely painted iron bridge.

Modern Restrooms

In addition to several typical park-style outhouses, a dog's human will find better comfort in this modern restroom.

Vine Cover

At this part of the trail, the walking dog will pass thru a vine-covered trellis.
