I-70 Rest Area - Mile Marker 104 (Westbound)

Green Area Availability : Not Scarce / Not Abundant
Green Area Access : Typical Access
Green Area Size : 5-10 min walk possible
Congestion : Effort minimizes contact with others

A little sniffing around turned this dog stop from mediocre to great.

The passenger car driving lane makes a loop which gives the rest area a general semi-circle shape.  For lower congestion and least used parking, circle around to the west side.  The Pet Comfort Station is near the top (north) of the semi-circle inside the driving lane.  In addition the the fire hydrant, there is an open green area about 75 feet by 150 feet.

Around the outside of the driving lane, the grass is maintained anywhere from 20-30 feet from the road.  Drainage along the road channels and holds water during rains (as we found during our rainy visit).

But the dog special at this spot is on the top (north) of the semi-circle drive where a gravel driveway leads to a maintenance shed.  Looking for more territory to sniff and mark, we followed this path and found that there is maintained grass circling to the left (west) around a patch of Native Wildflowers and grass.  We followed this path for about 250 yards.  In drier times, we could have made a loop back along the driving lane.

On the other side of the western fence was a cattle herd.  So if you are an easily spooked dog... beware.

There appeared to be no functional water fountains / pumps around the grounds.  The Chauffeur said the restroom house was basic but very clean.

Path along Western Fence

Show/Hide

We followed this wide path along the western fence for about 250 yards. We could have looped back along the road in drier times.

Pet Comfort Area

While you may or may not find much comfort in the Pet Comfort station itself, without crossing the driving lane there is about 1/4 acre of open green area for dogs to stretch, sniff, and mark territory away from the crowds.

Maintenance Shed

On the north side of the rest area, you will see a gravel driveway leading to a shed.  Take this to follow a path around along the west side.

Two Trees

Along the western-fence path, there is a maintained spot around two trees that is about 50 feet by 50 feet in addition to the path..  Nearby across the fence was a cattle herd.

End of Path

Large green area with several trees for the traveling dog to sniff around.  If it hadn't been raining so much we could have looped back around the stand of native grass along the road.
