Green Area Availability : Easy to find
Green Area Access : Typical Access
Green Area Size : 5-10 min walk possible
Congestion : Effort minimizes contact with others

Traveling dogs should instruct their personal chauffeurs to drive on past the Visitor Center where you will find low-use parking away from the crowds.  From there you will have easy access to the green and maintained dog trails.

Whoever is responsible for maintaining the grounds here obviously has the traveling dog in mind.  Behind the picnic areas and building, for the entire length of the rest area are mowed paths allowing dogs plenty of sniffing and marking opportunities.  In a prior summer visit before we started K9RoadTrip.com, the grass had been allowed to grow tall -- giving more seclusion and privacy for the dog following the mowed paths.  We guess that the grass has been mowed in preparation for winter and next year's growth season.

Unlike the Homestead Rest Area down the road at Mile Marker 27, the outside freeze-proof fountains were in operation.

In addition to the traditional dog walk, there a couple sizable green "islands" with the south end "island" being about 1/3 acre.

The Chauffeur said the inside was not quite as nice as the Homestead Rest Area but still above average in comfort.

Water Fountain

Freeze-proof fountain provides water source for the thirsty dog.

Dog Walk Paths

This rest area has well-maintained dog walks that wind and curve from the north to south end.  From wherever you park, just head towards the back (east) of the rest area.  There are many signs to let you know dogs are welcome.

South Green Island

About 2/3 of an acre.  Mostly open but has several trees and a patch of prairie grass offering sniffing opportunities for traveling dogs.

North Green Island

The north green "island" is about 1/3 acre with lots of trees.  The area is about 250 feet long and generally 50 feet wide.

Even More Green!

If all the other green at this rest area isn't enough for a tired dog to stretch, there's still a patch about 75 feet wide and 200 feet long on the north end where dogs.
