This is NOT your typical dog park.  To say the dog off-leash area at Shelby Farms is huge would be like saying Pluto is far away.

Dogs that like the water have numerous options.  We counted at least 5 large ponds as we walked the path shown on our map here; that loop was 2 miles!

The dog that likes the outdoors, swimming, or free-range roaming will LOVE Shelby Farms.  Just inside Gate 12 are at least a half dozen picnic tables, water fountains, and washing station (2 pumps with hoses).

It is obvious this dog park is popular -- and for good reason.  We first visited early on a Friday evening and the skys were looking like rain; so the crowd wasn't overwhelming.  But we heard on weekends and other popular times the roaming dogs are plenty.

Near the southwest corner we spotted 2 deer.  The squirrels must have been thinking it was going to rain too; we only saw 1 fox (red) squirrell.

Any dog in the Memphis area should plan a trip to Shelby Farms.

2-mile loop

Show/Hide

The dog park at Shelby Farms has many paths to follow.  This 2-mile loop shows our path as we explored the dog off-leash area which at times was a wide gravel trail, at times a dirt path, and other times simply a worn path through the grass.

Gate 12

Gate 12 is where the amenities such a water fountains, washing station, and picnic tables are found.  Through the spring-loaded gate we entered a found vast expanse of dog paradise.

Pond #1

The southwest corner of this pond seems to be the popular gathering spot for dogs and their human companions.  Here you will find a couple picnic tables and bench.

Pond #2

This pond was less crowded and seemed to be popular with the more serious swimming dogs like labrador retrievers.

Southside / Pond #3

Less crowded the southside offers opportunities for dogs to sniff and explore.  Here's where we saw the squirrell.  The pond is more "swampy" and we imagine earlier in the summer it was great for chasing bullfrogs.

Hester Road

Hester Road is a gravel road bisecting the off-leash dog area. From what we could tell it was more of a service road for authorized vehicles.

Deer

We spotted 2 deer here.

Shared Equestrian Area

From what we here the equestrian area is lightly used.
